Chop Suey Club
“We believe the best way to dissipate xenophobia is to make your own culture more accessible to others. Chop Suey Club is an effort to open up contemporary Chinese culture to a larger audience.” –Ruoyi Jiang, owner
Chop Suey Club, located on the corner of Hester and Orchard St. in the heart of Chinatown, opened in the Fall of 2016. The boutique offers a wide variety of products from rare art to designer clothing to furniture, all from Chinese and China-based artists. All of the products are personally curated by the owner to match the store’s eclectic, contemporary Chinese aesthetic. Besides the owner, Ruoyi Jiang, there are currently two part-time employees. The concept of Chop Suey Club originated after the owner, Ruoyi, realized the lack of modern Chinese art and design in the U.S. market. Chop Suey Club also pays homage to its neighboring community and traditional Chinese culture by featuring a “$$ Dollar Store” which includes hand-picked knick-knacks from local Chinatown dollar stores. The shop attracts a wide variety of customers, from tourists to art collectors to wandering passersby and the edgy, yet colorful display windows often attract curious looks from locals and tourists alike.
